Dar telecoms firm impresses

Dar es Salaam. A team of officials from the US embassy visited the headquarters of the Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited on Wednesday and commended the firm for doing a good job during President Barack Obama’s visit to Tanzania.

TTCL staff provided communication services for the US presidential team during their time here.

Led by Mr Jeff Shrader, US embassy officials cooperated with the telecoms giant’s experts to ensure there was effective communication round the clock during the US President’s visit.

TTCL’s chief of marketing and sales, Mr Peter Ngota, said the company appreciated the comments they received from the embassy.

“The feedback has given us an assurance that we have the technical capacity and professionals required to serve high level and demanding jobs,” he said.

The embassy officials handed gifts to TTCL engineers who were part of the team. They also plan to give them certificates of competence at a later date.

TTCL manages the national information and communication technology broadband backbone through the ministry of Communication, Science and technology.

The infrastructure will enhance usage of ICT applications for sustainable social-economic development, including implementation of e-government, e-learning, e-health, and e-commerce. The firm also seeks to provide access to international submarine fibre optic cables through the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System and Seacom at their landing point in Dar es Salaam to all the landlocked neighbouring countries. The company envisages making Tanzania a hub of ICT infrastructure and solutions that enhance sustainable socio-economic development.
