Kigoma. Vice President Philip Mpango yesterday commended Oryx Gas Tanzania’s new initiative to promote the use of clean energy and reducing environmental pollution.
Dr Mpango, whose docket also handles environment issues, poured praises on the company that has provided gas cylinders to 214 pregnant women and 86 community health workers in Buhigwe District.
The VP graced the event.
“This is a good initiative. It is in line with the government’s efforts to adopt clean coking energy across the country,” he said.
Oryx Gas has been distributing the cylinders to various communities in Tanzania to complement the government's efforts to promote the use of clean energy.
The government believes massive use of clean energy will help reducing the use of wood and charcoal, thus improving community health, welfare and protecting the environment.
The efforts are also in line with the government’s goal of giving access to clean energy to up to 80 percent of Tanzania’s households by 2032.
Oryx Gas has partnered with the Doris Molleli Foundation in promoting the use of clean cooking energy for all.
The distribution of gas cylinders was preceded by a training on the correct use of gas which was facilitated by Oryx Gas zonal manager, Mr Alex John.
“We believe that Buhigwe Community health workers represent majority people and they should be role models for change towards clean energy use. We all know that this group has a great influence on the people they are taking care of, so we at Oryx have decided to provide LPGs to encourage them to convince others on the importance of energy change to LPG,” Oryx Gas said in a statement.
Each year, Oryx Gas Tanzania invests millions of dollars in new cylinders that are introduced to the market every day.
The company also offers the cylinders at a huge discount, subsidising a lot of LPG costs for starting equipment (cylinder, gas, burner, trivet) to enable people to switch from wood and charcoal fuels to clean energy and make gas available throughout the country.
