Dar es Salaam. Tigo Tanzania has introduced an innovative service that allows its Tigo Pesa mobile money clients to access their accounts and conduct transactions through WhatsApp.
The initiative not only enhances the convenience of financial operations but also extends Tigo's market presence in line with the growing popularity of social media platforms.
According to the statistics from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), as of June 2023, the country had 47.27 million mobile money accounts, with 14.8 million belonging to Tigo Pesa clients.
WhatsApp is one of the most widely used social media platforms, ranking fourth in popularity, following YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok.
During the launch of the service today, Tigo's Chief Officer for Mobile Financial Services, Ms Angelica Pesha, emphasized the significance of this move, as the telecom company takes a significant step in providing its customers with seamless and accessible financial services.
She said, "The integration of Tigo Pesa with WhatsApp aligns with the growing trend of digital payments and the increasingly influential role of social media in shaping the way we interact and transact."
Ms Pesha stated that the integration of Tigo Pesa with WhatsApp empowers clients to manage their finances with the desired convenience and simplicity.
This integration is part of Tigo Tanzania's broader strategy to foster economic growth and expand its market reach.
She further added, "Through this strategic partnership with WhatsApp, the company aims to create a financial ecosystem that allows users to make payments, send money, and manage their accounts, all within the familiar WhatsApp environment."
To access this service, customers only need to save the number 0675300300 on their devices and initiate a chat on WhatsApp.
This prompts them to register their Tigo Pesa mobile number and complete transactions seamlessly.
The types of transactions available through Tigo Rafiki include government payments, merchant payments (Lipa Kwa Simu), and peer-to-peer transactions.
Tigo Tanzania's integration of Tigo Pesa with WhatsApp not only streamlines mobile transactions but also has the potential to empower a larger portion of the population, including those who were previously excluded from formal banking channels.
