ZIFF calls for focus on social issues in filmmaking
The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), chairman Chande Omar has emphasised the festival's new direction at the opening of the 27th edition: encouraging filmmakers to tackle pressing social issues rather than focusing solely on romantic themes.
"We hope that next year's festival will see a closer collaboration with the government on a crucial matter: urging filmmakers to create films that address the challenges that our society currently faces," Omar stated.
He highlighted the importance of cinema in raising awareness about critical issues like child abduction, child abuse, unemployment, and the struggles faced by women.
"These are significant challenges in our community, and filmmakers have a crucial role in bringing them to light and sparking meaningful discussions," he added.
Omar stressed the need for government support to make this shift possible.
"To move beyond romantic themes and focus on social challenges, filmmakers need funding and resources. For ZIFF to thrive and be impactful, we need strong backing from our government," he said.
"We cannot continue allowing filmmakers to produce only romantic films when there are so many vital social issues that need to be addressed for the benefit of our community."
Omar's call to action signals a significant shift for ZIFF, as the festival seeks to inspire filmmakers to use their craft to highlight and address the social issues affecting Zanzibar and beyond.
