Abu Dhabi hosts global forum on integrating virtues in AI

The Abu Dhabi Peace Forum convened a landmark meeting titled "Beyond Values: Towards Integrating Virtues in Artificial Intelligence" on February 27-29, 2024.

The gathering brought together diverse stakeholders to discuss the crucial issue of integrating ethical considerations and virtues into the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI).

Representatives from various entities participated in the discussions, including the British government, the Vatican, the University of Cambridge's Varday Institute of Science and Faith, and major organizations actively involved in the field of AI. Notably, the Emirates Council for Sharia and Islamic Law, Mohammed bin Zayed University for the Humanities, and experts, researchers, and individuals interested in AI from across the globe actively participated.

Dr. Russell Rooke, Director of the Goodwill Partnership Foundation in the UK, moderated the opening session. He commended both the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in fostering a global model of civilization, and the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum's role in promoting ethical and religious leadership within the field of AI, emphasizing its collaborative efforts with civil society.

Abdullah bin Bayh, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum and Emirates Council for Sharia and Islamic Law, emphasized the UAE's dedication, under the guidance of President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to leading global efforts in establishing an ethical framework for optimal AI utilization. He characterized the forum's meeting as an embodiment of the UAE's vision, actively addressing global concerns regarding the need to bridge the gap between scientific advancements and ethical frameworks.

His Excellency Mr. Miles Stacy, advisor to the British Prime Minister, expressed his government's support for the initiative, acknowledging the meeting's significance and its timeliness, coinciding with the successful hosting of COP28 in the UAE and the country's various achievements on diverse fronts.

The newly formed Religion and Civil Society Committee for Artificial Intelligence, chaired by Sheikh Al Mahfouz bin Bayh, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum, plays a crucial role in ensuring comprehensive and impactful participation from religious institutions, civil society organizations, businesses, and government officials. This committee, announced in London in December 2023, aims to enrich public discourse and international legislation on AI development and deployment, building upon the outcomes of the summit on safe AI development led by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The Abu Dhabi Peace Forum's meeting signifies a significant step towards fostering global collaboration in ensuring the responsible and ethical development and application of AI. By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, this initiative paves the way for a future where advancements in AI are guided by a robust ethical framework, safeguarding human values and ensuring a more equitable and sustainable future.
