Duct-tape banana artwork sells for $6.2 million (Sh16 billion) in US
A banana which was purchased for just $0.35, has been sold as artwork for $6.2 million (£4.9 million) (Sh16 billion), reports The New York Times.
The controversial artwork known as Comedian, featuring a taped banana, returned to the spotlight when it fetched the astonishing amount at Sotheby’s in New York—four times its pre-sale estimate.
According to the auction house, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun triumphed over six competitors to secure the installation.
Justin said he will personally eat the banana as part of his unique artistic experience.
First unveiled in 2019, Comedian quickly became a viral phenomenon, sparking widespread debates about the nature of art.
The installation, which has toured globally, includes instructions on replacing the banana when it rots—or gets eaten.
