Machumu named the new Mwananchi editorial boss

Dar es Salaam. The Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) Board of Directors has appointed Mr Bakari Machumu  MCL Executive Editor.

The appointment, which came into effect on July 1, is part of organisational changes aimed at steering forward Tanzania’s leading media company, MCL Managing Director Tido Mhando said in a statement.

Mr Machumu now has the wider role of overseeing editorial operations of both the print and electronic media within the company.

“In his new role, Bakari will provide editorial leadership, policy and strategic direction to MCL print and electronic operations to maintain their character as a centre of journalism excellence."

"Please join me in congratulating Bakari in his new and challenging role in driving our print and electronic media forward,” Mr Mhando said.

MCL publishes Mwananchi, Mwananchi Jumamosi, Mwananchi Jumapili, The Citizen, The Citizen on Saturday, The Citizen on Sunday and Mwanaspoti in print form and online. The head of editorial in MCL was previously known as the group managing editor.

Mr Machumu joined MCL in July 2004 as Business Editor, The Citizen. He was promoted to Managing Editor in May 2006 and held the position until his recent promotion.

He has also been involved in a number of key editorial initiatives aimed at ensuring that The Citizen becomes the business paper of choice in Tanzania.

Mr Machumu said it was an honour to lead and work with the editorial team comprising managing editors Dennis Msacky of Mwananchi, Hawra Shamte of Mwananchi weekend editions, Frank Sanga of Mwanaspoti and Costantine Sebastian of The Citizen weekend editions and Online and Social Media Editor Victor Mushi.

“I also appreciate the support of the MCL board, management and staff in general. Together we can play our part by engaging, scrutinising, finding and eventually offering solutions for a better society in these challenging times,” said Mr Machumu.

Mr Machumu holds a BSc in Agriculture General from Sokoine University and several certificates in media leadership and journalism from renowned institutions and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the print media industry.

Before joining MCL, he worked as a business reporter and Features Editor with the Business Times and later as News Editor with the Daily Times.
