                Arusha. The new master plan for Arusha will cover selected areas in neighbouring districts beyond the city boundaries, according to consultants.

Execution of the ambitious plan, prepared by Surbana Consultants Pte Ltd of Singapore, will finally begin in August this year, one of the focus being to overhaul and age-old water supply and sewerage networks.

A brief on the consultants’ report availed to The Citizen indicated areas within the master plan cover will total 608 square kilometres, 278 km square of which are within the city.

Another 330 square kilometres will be selected areas of Arusha and Arumeru districts which would remain in their respective local authorities but would have their development programmes would be streamlined with Arusha city.

The Arusha 2035 Masterplan, as it is officially called, aims to develop Arusha as a Green Tourism Capital of East Africa and showcase its economic and social potential.

“It is an important milestone for our region. Future needs of our growing city require us to provide more housing, better infrastructure, better development plans for industry, housing and green spaces in an environmentally responsible manner”, said the Arusha city director Juma Iddi.
