Moshi. The Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Dr Damas Ndumbaro, said yesterday that Mama Samia’s Legal Aid Campaign will reach all councils, districts, wards, villages and streets across Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar to ensure free legal aid services for all citizens.
Speaking at the campaign launch in Kilimanjaro Region yesterday, Dr Ndumbaro said the government was committed to resolving legal conflicts and addressing human rights violations.
“This campaign will cover every corner of the country. We will ensure that every conflict is addressed and that those violating people’s rights are held accountable,” he asserted.
He noted that in the 16 regions where the campaign has already been implemented, a strong demand for justice was observed, reflecting the President’s vision of enhancing access to legal services.
Dr Ndumbaro added that the campaign would particularly target those who had been involved in human rights violations, ensuring justice for victims.
Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) President Boniface Mwabukusi said legal aid is a fundamental service, urging legal professionals to provide assistance with dedication. He highlighted that many disputes stemmed from inheritance and land issues due to a reluctance to write wills.
"Legal aid services are a priority for TLS, and we will support the government in ensuring that disadvantaged citizens receive justice," he said.
Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Nurdini Babu welcomed the campaign, noting that many residents were facing legal challenges but lacked knowledge of where to seek assistance. He pledged that legal aid services would be extended to all wards in the region.
Yohana Marko, representing the Government Bar Association, assured that government lawyers would actively provide legal education and services, following the Attorney General’s directives.
"This initiative will help resolve disputes related to inheritance, land, and marriage. I urge government lawyers to participate fully," he urged.
Moshi Mjini MP, Jacob Tarimo (CCM), said many residents have sought legal help from his office, and the campaign will provide much-needed relief, particularly for low-income citizens.
"This service is crucial because justice should not be seen as something only for the wealthy," he said.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Amon Mpanju, commended the initiative, saying it would benefit vulnerable groups, including widows and small traders, by ensuring their legal rights are protected.
