11 killed in tragic Handeni Accident

Handeni. Two days after a deadly crash claimed eight lives in Handeni District, another fatal accident has occurred in the same area, leaving 11 people dead and 13 others injured.

The collision, involving a mini-bus and a truck, took place on December 25, 2024, at around 9PM in the Kwenkwale area, Kitumbi Ward, Handeni District.

Handeni District Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Security and Safety Committee, Albert Msando, confirmed the tragic incident, identifying the vehicles involved as a truck, registration number T.707 EBZ, traveling from Lushoto to Dar es Salaam, and a mini-bus, registration number T.497 DZW, which was coming from Mkata to Tanga.

"Eleven people, including both drivers, lost their lives in the crash. Thirteen others were rushed to Handeni District Hospital for treatment, with nine of them in critical condition. Our doctors are doing their best to provide the necessary care," Msando said.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Handeni District Hospital for identification and the required procedures before being released to their families.

As for the cause of the accident, Msando said an investigation is underway, with the authorities promising to provide updates once the inquiry is complete.
