121 University of Dodoma students discontinued over exam malpractice

What you need to know:

  • Some 170 students were initially suspected of manipulating the university’s results system (SR2) during the 2023/24 academic year.

Dodoma. A total of 121 students from the University of Dodoma (UDOM) have been discontinued from their studies in the 2023/24 academic year over tampering with examination results.

Fifteen other cases remain under investigation, according to a statement from the UDOM's Communication and Marketing Unit.

Some 170 students were initially suspected of manipulating the university’s results system (SR2) during the 2023/24 academic year.

“The government formed a task force, which included IT experts, to investigate the allegations and present a report to the university,” the statement read.

Upon receiving the report, the university initiated internal disciplinary procedures, summoning the accused students to present their cases before a final decision was made in accordance with the institution’s regulations.

“A total of 148 students appeared before the disciplinary panel, while 32 failed to attend. Among those who were heard, 121 were found guilty of exam malpractice, leading to their discontinuation as approved by the university senate,” the statement added.

Investigations into the remaining 15 students are ongoing, and some students have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

According to the university regulations, students dissatisfied with the senate’s decision have the right to appeal.

The appeals window opens two weeks after examination results are released and remains open for another two weeks. However, students who miss this period may still submit an appeal at any time, it said.

The university emphasised its commitment to upholding academic integrity, stating that all actions taken were in line with its examination policies and aimed at maintaining educational standards.

UDOM Students' Government President Muhammad Muhammad confirmed that student representatives participated in all decision-making meetings regarding the accused students and that the affected students had an opportunity to defend themselves.

Efforts to reach the affected students for comments were unsuccessful, as the student government office at UDOM did not have the contact details.
