New York. A 17-year-old Tanzanian immigrant was shot and killed on Friday evening in the city of Newburgh, police have confirmed.

Emergency services responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 8:00 p.m. and found the teenager with critical injuries.

He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, but as of Monday morning, no arrests had been made.

Police have not released information regarding suspects or possible motives, and are urging members of the public to come forward with any relevant information.

Tuhenya, who emigrated from Tanzania with his family several years ago, was a student at Newburgh Free Academy and had recently completed his junior year.

He was reportedly preparing to return to school in the autumn and had aspirations of pursuing higher education.

Classmates described him as quiet, hardworking, and well-liked among peers.

The shooting has sparked concern among local residents and members of the Tanzanian diaspora, who gathered over the weekend for a vigil in his memory.

Community leaders and youth advocates have called for increased security in residential areas and greater investment in violence prevention programmes.

Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey said in a brief statement that the city mourns the tragic loss and is committed to supporting law enforcement in their investigation.

“This young man’s life was cut short far too soon,” Harvey said. “We stand with his family and demand justice.”

The incident adds to a growing list of gun-related deaths involving teenagers in the Hudson Valley region, prompting renewed calls for action on gun violence.
