Dar es Salaam. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has confirmed that at least 28 people have been injured and one confirmed dead following the collapse of a multi-storey building in Kariakoo this morning, November 16, 2024.
Mr Majaliwa visited the disaster site this afternoon to assess the ongoing rescue efforts and pledging government support for the victims and their families.
Speaking at the scene, Mr Majaliwa conveyed condolences on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and reassured the public of the government's commitment to saving lives.
"I extend my deepest sympathies to those affected by this tragedy, particularly the Kariakoo community. We are fully engaged in rescue operations, and our priority remains to reach every survivor," he said.
According to Majaliwa, rescue teams are utilising specialised equipment, including oxygen supplies, to safely reach individuals trapped beneath the rubble.
He highlighted the importance of using strategic and cautious approaches rather than sheer force in order to avoid further endangering lives.
“Our goal is to ensure no life is lost if it can be saved. I urge the public to remain calm and allow the rescue teams and security personnel to carry out their work without hindrance,” Majaliwa added, commending the patience and cooperation shown by the crowd.
Medical teams have been deployed on-site, with ambulances on standby to provide immediate care. Security has been tightened to prevent theft and ensure the protection of goods in the bustling Kariakoo trading area.
Majaliwa urged the leadership of Kariakoo Market to collaborate with authorities in safeguarding traders' assets during the crisis.
He praised the community's spirit of solidarity, noting how residents and traders prioritised the rescue of trapped individuals over salvaging merchandise.
"The unity shown today is commendable. People have set aside concerns about property and focused on saving lives," he remarked.
The Prime Minister also thanked private sector partners and emergency services for their rapid response, noting that additional resources have been mobilised to aid in the rescue.
He assured the public that President Samia Suluhu Hassan is being kept informed of every development, emphasising the government’s commitment to handling the crisis with transparency and diligence.
In his address, Majaliwa called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse, stressing the need to enforce stricter construction standards.
"We must understand what led to this disaster and take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future. New construction projects must adhere to the highest safety protocols," he emphasised.
As rescue operations progressed, Majaliwa appealed to the media and onlookers to respect the cordoned-off areas and allow emergency personnel to work without interference.
He reiterated the importance of maintaining order and expressed hope that the rescue efforts will yield more survivors.
The collapse has caused a significant disruption in Kariakoo, halting business activities as concerned traders and residents anxiously await news about their loved ones.
The government has pledged ongoing support and regular updates as the rescue mission and investigation continue.
