Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan Hospital Dar es Salaam commemorated the World Physiotherapy Day by hosting free screening that focused on low back pain (LBP).
The day is celebrated on September 8, each year and this year's theme focuses on addressing low back pain - a widespread issue impacting millions worldwide.
The hospital dedicated the celebrations to raise awareness about the crucial role of physiotherapy in promoting health, mobility, and independence.
The head of the Physiotherapy Department at the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Simion Gundah, emphasised the crucial role of physiotherapy in achieving a pain-free future.
“Physiotherapy is key to unlocking a pain-free future, where the strength of our backs supports the strength of our lives,” he said during the opening remarks, highlighting how essential back health is to overall well-being and quality of life.
Attendees benefited from free educational sessions, one-on-one consultations with qualified physiotherapists, and discounted treatment plans.
As the only JCIA-accredited institution in the country, Aga Khan Hospital said is committed to providing personalised, expert care to support recovery and promote pain-free living.
“The hospital achieves this through educational programmes on self-care strategies, customised exercise programmes, and physiotherapy interventions such as manual therapy,” the hospital said in a statement.
The World Physical Therapy Day, established by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (now World Physiotherapy) in 1996, highlights the crucial role of physiotherapy in managing and preventing LBP which is a major global health issue, affecting 619 million people in 2020 and is the leading cause of disability.
It can impact anyone and is often non-specific, meaning it isn't tied to a single identifiable cause. Rehabilitation through physiotherapy is essential for managing LBP effectively, as it improves overall health and reduces the likelihood of future episodes.
