Airtel Sh650 billion investment spurs economic growth

The forum organized by the Office of the Treasury Registrar and held at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School in Kibaha, Coast Region brought together key government and private sector stakeholders to discuss sustainable development strategies.
Minister for Planning and Investment, Prof Kitila Mkumbo, praised the contributions of minority interest companies, emphasizing their importance in strengthening Tanzania’s economy. He singled out Airtel Tanzania for its continued support and impact on national development.
"I commend the Office of the Treasury Registrar for organizing this important forum and extend my appreciation to Airtel Tanzania for its steadfast support," said Prof Mkumbo. "This event highlights the vital role of collaboration between the government and private sector in economic transformation. Minority interest companies continue to make substantial contributions to government revenue, with annual dividends growing from Sh58 billion in 2019/20 to Sh195 billion in 2023/24 an impressive increase of over 200 percent."
He further stated that Tanzania’s Development 2050 agenda envisions a stronger role for the private sector in shaping the nation’s economic ambitions.
Airtel Tanzania’s Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, who participated as a panel speaker, expressed gratitude for the recognition and reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting the country’s economic progress through technology and innovation.
"It is an honor to be part of the Government Minority Interest Directors Forum 2025. We remain dedicated to leveraging technology to drive economic growth, enhance business performance, and create long-term value for all stakeholders," Kamoto stated.
Kamoto highlighted Airtel Tanzania’s substantial investments in network infrastructure, revealing that the company has invested over Sh650 billion in the past five years. In 2024 alone, Airtel allocated Sh130 billion for infrastructure expansion, spectrum acquisition, and the deployment of advanced technology to enhance connectivity across Tanzania.
Airtel Tanzania’s Director of Business Enterprise, Joseph Muhere, emphasized the need for continuous collaboration between the government and private sector to accelerate national development.
"Stronger partnerships are essential for fostering innovation, expanding investment opportunities, and developing sustainable solutions that contribute to Tanzania’s long-term economic success," Muhere noted.
The Government Minority Interest Directors Forum 2025 concluded with a renewed commitment to enhancing strategic partnerships, reaffirming the private sector’s crucial role in Tanzania’s economic future.
