Artist who was arrested and later released after burning President Samia's picture goes missing

What you need to know:

  • According to his father, Shadrack was abducted on August 2, 2024, approximately 20 days after his release from Ruanda Prison in Mbeya Region.

Mbeya. Shadrack Chaula, 24, who was previously arrested for burning a picture of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and charged with spreading false information, has reportedly gone missing.

Shadrack, a resident of Mbeya Region, was sentenced on July 4, 2024, to two years in prison or a fine of Sh5 million. Unable to pay the fine, he was sentenced to prison. He was later released on July 8 after a fundraising campaign raised the Sh5 million within a few hours.

His father, Yusuph Chaula, 56, has appealed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for intervention, claiming that his son was abducted by unknown individuals.

According to his father, Shadrack was abducted on August 2, 2024, approximately 20 days after his release from Ruanda Prison in Mbeya Region.

"I am asking the government to intervene so that my son is found, whether alive or dead," said Yusuph Chaula.

He added that, following news of his son's abduction, he has made various efforts to locate him through relatives, the community, and hospitals, but without success. He has now sought help from the government and police to ensure his son's whereabouts are determined.

His concern is growing as days pass, especially because of the forceful manner in which his son was taken.

"Initially, I admit my son Shadrack acted recklessly by burning the picture of the head of state. The law took its course, and he was sentenced to two years by the Rungwe District Court," he said.

The father noted that, in addition to being an artist, his son was involved in a shop business and owned two car washing bays in Ntokela Village, where he was well-regarded by other young people.

"He was a very obedient young man and lived harmoniously with his peers, which is why his abduction shocked us," he said.

Yusuph Chaula is currently in a dilemma, unsure where to turn for help, and is pleading with the government to assist in finding his son, whether alive or dead.

Mbeya Region Police Commander Benjamin Kuzaga said an investigation into the matter is underway.

"We are continuing the investigation to determine the truth about the incident," he said.
