Arusha. The Member of Parliament for Arusha Urban, Mr Mrisho Gambo, has teamed up with Oryx Gas Tanzania to distribute cooking gas cylinders to families with children with disabilities in the Arusha region.

The gas firm’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Ndomba, said the donation was part of the company’s ongoing efforts to support underprivileged families and aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s environmental conservation initiatives.

“Oryx is committed to supporting the government’s clean energy efforts. We have collaborated with various MPs to provide free Oryx gas cylinders and stoves to citizens,” Ndomba said.

Ndomba also provided safety tips for using gas, advising users to keep windows open while using the gas to prevent accidents in case of leaks.

"Our gas is manufactured with a distinctive smell, similar to rotten eggs, to alert users in the event of a leak. This helps in taking necessary precautions," he added.

In his remarks, Mr Gambo said the provision of the gas cylinders would significantly ease the challenge of accessing cooking energy, especially during emergencies when quick access is crucial, such as when a child requires urgent medical attention.

"This is not our first such initiative in Arusha. Since I became an MP in 2000, we have distributed various assistive devices to people with disabilities and provided health insurance coverage. I appreciate President Samia for reinstating health insurance for children, which has been extremely beneficial," Gambo said.

He announced that 600 children will benefit from health insurance as part of the initiative. Gambo has personally funded insurance for 210 children, with additional support from businessman Atul Mittal (100 children), Satbir HansPaul and friends (100 children), and the Arusha City Council through Director Juma Hamduni (200 children).

In his remarks, Mr Hamduni, expressed support for Gambo’s efforts, describing them as a valuable service to the community and a fulfillment of the CCM party’s manifesto. “Since this work by the MP is a service to God, as a city, we support him and will contribute by covering the health insurance for 200 children and providing three wheelchairs. On Monday, I will present a check for Sh11 million,” Hamduni announced.

Gracing the event, the Deputy Minister of Health Dr Godwin Mollel, commended Mr Gambo for his dedication to the Arusha community and encouraged him to continue implementing the CCM manifesto.

Dr Mollel noted that the sixth-phase government has improved the health sector by acquiring modern medical equipment and treating previously incurable diseases, which had previously required costly treatment abroad.
