Dodoma. In a fresh bid to revive the national carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), the government will purchase four aircrafts by 2018, parliament was told yesterday.

Speaking during a question and answer session, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Minerals, Dr Medard Kalemani, told MPs that this year the government would receive two aircrafts with capacity to carry 78 passengers each. He said the two planes will ply local and regional routes.

President Magufuli has repeatedly promised to buy two aircrafts this year using funds saved from his current cost-cuting drive.

He reiterated the pledge Friday while laying the foundation stone for the construction of a flyover at the Tazara intersection in Dar es Salaam.

On top of the two planes to be bought this year, Dr Kalemani added that the government was also looking forward to purchasing two new planes with capacity of carrying between 120 and 155 passengers each by end of 2018.

The 155-seater planes are part of ATCL plans to revive the South Africa, West Africa, India and United Arab Emirates routes.

The troubled national carrier is also seeking new planes to fly the China, Far East and European Union routes.

Dr Kalemani told the parliament that the revival of ATCL will help to increase the number of tourists in the country and thus boost the national economy.
