Catholic bishop Isuja, 87, dies

Retired Bishop Mathias Joseph Isuja of the Dodoma Diocese Roman Catholic Church died yesterday at Saint Gasper Missionary Hospital at Itigi in Singida Region after a long illness.

The body of BishopTIsuja, 87, who had been admitted to the hospital, was sent sent to Dodoma Regional Hospital yesterday for preservation. The late Bishop is expected to be buried on April 20 at the grounds of the Paul of the Cross Cathedral in the region.

Dodoma. Retired Bishop Mathias Joseph Isuja of the Dodoma Diocese Roman Catholic Church died yesterday at Saint Gasper Missionary Hospital at Itigi in Singida Region after a long illness.

The body of BishopTIsuja, 87, who had been admitted to the hospital, was sent sent to Dodoma Regional Hospital yesterday for preservation. The late Bishop is expected to be buried on April 20 at the grounds of the Paul of the Cross Cathedral in the region.

The late spiritual leader was born on August 14, 1929 in Haubi Village in Kondoa District. He attended various schools including Iringa Region’s Tosamaganga Secondary School before joining the Moshi Theological College, from where he graduated in 1959.

n 1964, President Nyerere appointed him councillor of Dodoma District Council until 1969.

In 1972, he criticised the president over the villagization programme. The cleric spearheaded the construction of many church-led schools in Dodoma Region, and was instrumental in sensitizing peasants on grape farming.
