CCM dominates local government elections with over 99% victory

Dar es Salaam. The ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has achieved a landslide victory in Tanzania’s local government elections, winning 99.01% of the village chairperson positions. This was announced by Mohamed Mchengerwa, Minister of State in the President's Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, during a press briefing today, Thursday, November 28, 2024.
“For the position of village chairperson, elections were conducted for 12,271 out of the 12,280 available positions,” Mchengerwa said. “Of these, CCM secured 12,150 positions, accounting for 99.01%. Chadema followed with 97 positions, equivalent to 0.79%, while ACT Wazalendo won 11 positions, representing 0.09%. CUF claimed 10 positions, equivalent to 0.08%.
“NCCR Mageuzi, UMD, and ADC each won 1 position, representing 0.01% respectively,” he added.
Mchengerwa further disclosed that in village council elections, CCM captured 229,075 out of 230,882 seats, translating to 99.31%.
“Chadema secured 1,222 seats, which is 0.53%, while ACT-Wazalendo took 232, equivalent to 0.1%. CUF managed to claim 105 seats, or 0.05%, and NCCR-Mageuzi won 16 seats, representing 0.01%,” he said.
He noted that smaller parties such as Demokrasia Makini, NLD, and ADC gained three, one, and one seat respectively, all below 0.001%.
Addressing neighbourhood chairperson results, Mchengerwa highlighted CCM’s continued dominance. “Elections were conducted in 63,849 out of 63,886 neighbourhoods,” he said.
“CCM won 62,728 positions, representing 98.26%. Chadema claimed 853, equivalent to 1.34%, while ACT-Wazalendo secured 150, or 0.23%. CUF garnered 78 positions, equivalent to 0.12%, with NCCR-Mageuzi, UDP, UMD, and ADC trailing behind with 10, six, two, and one position respectively,” he said.
Mchengerwa commended the peaceful nature of the polls, lauding the participation of various political groups as a testament to Tanzania’s growing democratic values.
“These results are a reflection of the confidence that citizens have in CCM’s ability to lead and deliver on its promises,” he said.
