Company to improve cashew nut processing

Mkinga: A baseline study to identify challenges inhibiting the cultivation of cashew nuts is currently being undertaken.
The baseline study under a cashew nut development project, named “Re-engineering the cashew value chain through farmer integration” has been implemented by a private company, Out Growers Tanzania Ltd in collaboration with Mkinga District Council.
Project officer Isaac Ndamanhyilu said the firm is introducing a turn-key cashew nut processing unit to be known as ‘Harambee’ that would be managed in clusters and beneficiaries would export directly to Europe.
He added that the first processing unit would be built in the Tanga City and act as a training ground for young people.
Mr Ndamanhyilu said the unit would employ 36 people in managerial and service positions, accommodating women and youth.
He noted that about between 50 and 70 per cent of the created jobs would be taken up by women under the age of 35. At least 3,095 households would benefit from the project.
