Conjoined twins get house

Dar es Salaam. Conjoined twins from Kisarawe, who were separated in a successful operation, have been granted a house as well as health cover for 10 years through the National Health Insurance Fund by the United Bank for Africa (UBA).
This is aimed at ensuring that they live in circumstances that boost their wellbeing once allowed out of hospital.
The twins, Gracious and Precious Mkono, were born in Kisarawe District and were operated on for separation on September 22 at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).
They,however, could not be discharged immediately because of unfavourable conditions back home.
UBA’s chief executive officer Usman Isiaka said yesterday that the bank decided to take the initiative after learning from the twins’ mother Esther Mkono that the family was seeking for financial support.
“We first offered to provide them with the 10-years health insurance cover, but then we discovered that they had an even more difficult situation which hindered them from returning back home,” said Mr Isiaka.
This is when the bank offered to construct for them a house. The two-bedroom house will cost Sh18.08 million and also the UBA staff joined together and contributed some Sh2 million more.
“The amount contributed by the staff has been deposited in a savings account at UBA with account no 56010560001396 under the twins names and any well-wisher can contribute through the account,” he said.
For his part, the director of MNH, Prof Lawrence Museru, said that hospital has spent over Sh30 million to provide care and treatment for the twins since they arrived at the hospital.
“The aim of ensuring that the twins are well cared for after leaving the hospital is so that all efforts done by the hospital won’t go to waste.
