Dar es Salaam. The Minister for Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, has announced that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will commence services on the stretch between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro at the end of January 2024.
The statement follows the recent trials of the train's engine on the railway.
Initially, several promises of its commencement had been made, but they were not implemented.
On November 19, 2020, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa visited the SGR Morogoro project and expressed satisfaction with the construction developments of the section.
At that time, the construction had been 90 percent complete, and he promised Tanzanians that the maiden trip would commence by April 2021.
On March 15, 2021, the former Minister of Construction and Transport, Dr Leonard Chamuriho, also announced in Morogoro that the SGR train would start operating in August of that year.
However, on April 20, 2021, the Prime Minister differed to August of the same year.
Speaking yesterday during meeting of seven of the Central Transport Union (CCTTFA) ministers, Professor Mbarawa said that the services would officially commence at the end of January 2024.
"The interesting thing is that, at the end of January 2024, we will officially start using our SGR transport from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro for passengers, not cargo,” he said.
