Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Coast bracing for power cuts

What you need to know:

  • Tanesco has confirmed that the planned outages are due to upgrades at the Ubungo Power Station in Dar es Salaam.

Dar es Salaam. Certain areas of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and the Coast will experience temporary power outages between Saturday, February 22, and Friday, February 28, 2025.

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has confirmed that the planned outages are due to upgrades at the Ubungo Power Station in Dar es Salaam.

The station, which operates at 220 kilovolts, will undergo improvements, leading to temporary power interruptions in various areas at different times.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Tanesco explained that the upgrades aim to improve electricity services.

The company will install a new, larger transformer with a capacity of 300 MVA to meet the growing power demands in Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and the Coast.

“During this period, we will also carry out maintenance work to strengthen the power infrastructure, particularly in preparation for the rainy season,” the statement said.

Tanesco apologised for any inconvenience caused and assured the public that the upgrades would not lead to continuous power outages over the stated period.

“We want to reassure citizens that these upgrades will not cause power outages for six consecutive days. The company is committed to minimising disruptions and will provide updates on the progress of the work until it is completed,” stated the state-owned power utility company.
