Dar es Salaam. Over 300 stakeholders from the waste management sector, including waste collectors, recyclers, and recycling companies, are set to take part in the International Zero Waste Day celebrations on April 30.
The Minister for Environment is expected to be the chief guest, Hamad Yussuf Masauni and the public is encouraged to use this opportunity to learn about best practices in environmental conservation.
The event’s goal is to raise awareness about the strategies of reduce, reuse, and recycle to minimize environmental pollution and promote a circular economy. Amina Kibora, the Enforcement Manager at the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), highlighted that the celebrations will focus on the importance of sustainable waste management practices.
“Waste is not trash; it is a valuable raw material if used properly. Instead of ending up in landfills or being incinerated, it can be used to generate renewable energy and other products,” said Kibora.
The event will be held at the Mnazi Mmoja industrial area in Dar es Salaam and will feature recycling exhibitions and investment opportunities in the environmental sector. Irene John, the Communications Manager at NEMC, emphasized the importance of educating the public on separating waste at the household level to ensure it is reused rather than becoming an environmental burden.
“We can use waste to generate electricity, fertilizer, and other essential raw materials,” she said.
This event is part of Tanzania's ongoing efforts to address environmental pollution and encourage the public to adopt long-term actions for conservation.
The government, through NEMC, remains committed to enhancing the waste management sector to contribute to sustainable development.
The International Zero Waste Day celebrations are part of global efforts to combat environmental pollution and conserve resources worldwide.
