Dar es Salaam. The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has asked the Court of Appeal to find former Dar es Salaam Crime Officer Abdallah Zombe guilty of assisting killers of three gemstone dealers and a taxi driver and not of killing.
The High Court set free Mr Zombe and nine other police officers who were charged with the Pande forest killings that shocked the nation but aggrieved DPP filed an appeal against the judgment.
In the appeal, the DPP argued that the High Court erred in law by not convicting Mr Zombe despite sufficient evidence against him.
Prior to taking the new position, the DPP notified the court he would no longer pursue an appeal against five of Zombe’s co-accused for lack of sufficient evidence to prove the case against them except four officers including Mr Zombe.
However, the DPP changed his stance last week and asked the panel of three judges hearing the case to find Zombe guilty of being an accessory after-the-act for assisting the culprits to avoid punishment while knowing they committed the offence.
