Dr Willibroad Slaa

What you need to know:

According to the priest-turned politician, he wanted outgoing Monduli MP to come clean regarding the Richmond scandal that tainted his name, leading to his dramatic resignation as Prime Minister in President Jakaya Kikwete’s government.

Dar es Salaam. Finally Chadema Secretary General Dr Willibroad Slaa has publicly announced he has quitted politics but promised to serve Tanzanians independently without joining any political party.

Dr Slaa said he took the decision since July 28, 2015 after differing with Chadema on procedures used to welcome former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa who is currently in the presidential race under the party’s sponsorship and Coalition of Defenders of the People’s Constitution (Ukawa).

Speaking at a press conference in Dar es Salaam Today, Dr Slaa said he was fully involved in the meetings to discuss the coming of former premier to the main opposition party but was not happy with the way the matter was fast-tracked despite Mr Lowassa failing to meet some conditions he had proposed.

“I’m a principled person, I do not hate anybody but I’m far away from the politics of lies and propaganda,” said Dr Slaa.

According to the priest-turned politician, he wanted outgoing Monduli MP to come clean regarding the Richmond scandal that tainted his name, leading to his dramatic resignation as Prime Minister in President Jakaya Kikwete’s government.

Also, Dr. Slaa demanded to know whether Lowassa would come as an asset along with top ruling CCM cadres that will add value to his party but that was not clarified and did not happen.

“After they failed to meet the mentioned conditions, I have decided to step out of the party that I participated in building. However, I will continue serving Tanzanians as an independent citizen,” Slaa insisted.

Using nearly two hours, the former Karatu MP discredited both former premiers Edward Lowassa and Fredrick Lowassa, saying they are not clean.
