Egyptians eye investments at Kiwira, Ruhudji coal plants

On meeting the minister of energy, Dr Medrad Kalemani, in Dodoma city on Tuesday, the company said they are capable of producing power out of coal and waterfalls.
Dar es Salaam. Egyptian company Orascom has shown an interest to invest in Kiwira and Ruhudji coal plants that together can produce 558 MW of power.
On meeting the minister of energy, Dr Medrad Kalemani, in Dodoma city on Tuesday, the company said they are capable of producing power out of coal and waterfalls.
According to a statement released by the ministry’s information unit, the talk was also attended by the ministry’s Commissioner of energy and petroleum as well as managing director of the national power utility, Tanzania National Electric Company (Tanesco), Dr Tito Mwinuka.
“They issued an assurance that they have enough capital, experience and high technology in the energy sector,” read the statement.
The minister instructed the company to discuss with Tanesco and State Mining Corporation (Stamico) regarding the projects.
“But the company should compete with other bidders when the tender will be announced. The government will cooperate with all investors,” said Dr Kalemani.
