Empowering African Women: Esther Ijewere on storytelling, resilience, and raising voices across the continent
What you need to know:
- In this exclusive interview with The Citizen, Women of Rubies founder and CEO Esther Ijewere shares her journey and vision for empowering African women. Women of Rubies celebrates resilient women, amplifying their voices and achievements. Ms Ijewere discusses the power of storytelling, offers advice for Tanzanian women entrepreneurs, and previews her upcoming Media Visibility BootCamp, designed to equip African women with essential media skills.
Ms Esther Ijewere, could you share the inspiration behind founding Women of Rubies and what motivated you to create a platform dedicated to empowering women?
The journey to founding Women of Rubies began with a deep sense of purpose and empathy for women who, like me, often struggle to find platforms that amplify their voices. I was inspired by the countless stories of women overcoming incredible odds yet remaining unseen and unheard. Women of Rubies was created to fill that gap—a space where women can share their journeys, find support, and access resources to grow personally and professionally. I wanted to create a platform that celebrates women’s resilience, talents, and potential, while also advocating for women’s rights and encouraging other women to see the power within themselves.
Women of Rubies has gained recognition across Africa. What unique value do you believe your platform brings to African women, and how do you see it resonating with women in Tanzania?
Women of Rubies celebrates women in all their diversity, from Africa to North America and beyond. We bring a unique blend of storytelling, empowerment programmes, and public relations expertise to help women shape their narratives, amplify their voices, and enhance their visibility. Our focus on relatable stories, cultural authenticity, and tangible support systems resonates deeply with women worldwide, including those in Tanzania, as they see their own challenges and triumphs reflected in others' journeys. By showcasing women’s achievements and addressing barriers unique to various communities, we not only celebrate their resilience but also foster solidarity and inspire a broader sense of purpose. This approach helps women connect meaningfully, equipping them with confidence and resources to drive lasting change.
In your experience, what role do storytelling and media play in shaping narratives around women’s achievements and rights, especially in African societies?
Storytelling is transformative. It shapes perspectives, shifts cultures, and challenges stereotypes. In African societies, storytelling and media are vital tools for highlighting women’s achievements, addressing systemic issues, and championing rights. By telling our own stories, we create a platform for voices that may otherwise go unheard, inspiring others and setting a new standard for how women are seen and valued. Through Women of Rubies, we’re not just celebrating achievements but also initiating conversations that encourage societies to view women as powerful contributors and change-makers.
Women’s economic empowerment is a growing focus globally. What are some key areas you believe need more attention to enhance women’s financial inclusion across the continent?
Women need greater access to resources, including finance, mentorship, and technology, which are crucial for economic empowerment. I believe three areas deserve particular focus: expanding access to funding for women-led businesses, providing financial literacy education, and building networks that offer mentorship and training. Often, women face barriers in securing loans or funding due to biases or limited networks. We need more initiatives that prioritise female entrepreneurs so they can scale their businesses, provide for their families, and contribute to economic growth.
Tanzania has a strong, resilient community of women entrepreneurs. What advice would you offer to Tanzanian women seeking to establish or scale their businesses in today’s economy?
To Tanzanian women entrepreneurs, I would say: believe deeply in the uniqueness of your vision and let that belief fuel your actions. Embrace the qualities that set you apart and trust that your ideas can bring positive change, not only for yourself but for your community. Invest in building a strong network of relationships with other women entrepreneurs, mentors, and allies. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and share your drive. Never underestimate the power of visibility; sharing your story is not just about promoting your business; it’s about inspiring others and breaking down barriers. Today’s digital tools offer immense opportunities to showcase your work globally. Consistency and resilience are essential in this journey. Challenges will come, but push forward, learn from each experience, and stay true to your purpose.
In what ways can Tanzanian women connect with Women of Rubies to benefit from the resources, support, and networking opportunities your organisation offers?
Tanzanian women can connect with Women of Rubies through multiple channels to access a wealth of resources, support, and networking opportunities. Our website, womenofrubies.com, offers comprehensive access to our programmes, success stories, and tools for growth. On our social media platforms (@womenofrubies_), we regularly share inspirational stories, updates on upcoming events, and empowerment tips. Through these initiatives, Women of Rubies is committed to equipping Tanzanian women, and women throughout Africa, with the tools and confidence they need to thrive.
Your work has brought to light over 1,000 inspiring stories of women worldwide. What key qualities do you believe are essential for women leaders who want to make a lasting impact in their communities?
I believe resilience, empathy, authenticity, consistency, and a commitment to serve are essential qualities for women leaders. Resilience helps leaders push through setbacks, while empathy allows them to understand and connect with others. Consistency builds trust and reliability, reinforcing their dedication over time, and authenticity ensures they lead with integrity. Most importantly, a true commitment to serve and uplift others makes a leader’s impact lasting and transformative. Women who embrace these qualities can inspire, support, and create meaningful change in their communities.
In December, you're hosting the Media Visibility Bootcamp, where you'll be presenting on the topic 'The Power of Wikipedia: Leveraging Open Knowledge for Women’s Visibility and Empowerment.' What unique opportunities do you believe the Media Visibility Bootcamp will offer African women in particular?
The upcoming Media Visibility BootCamp is a transformative two-day event on the 7th and 8th of December, featuring ten remarkable speakers across fields including media, digital branding, entrepreneurship, and public relations. Each speaker will offer insights and strategies designed to empower African women to elevate their personal and professional visibility in today’s media-driven world. The BootCamp will cover essential topics such as leveraging social media, building a personal brand, mastering storytelling, and connecting with audiences through powerful narratives. One of the key sessions, which I will lead, focuses on the power of Wikipedia as an open knowledge platform. Women will learn practical steps to create a Wikipedia presence, present their achievements accurately, and build credibility. This knowledge will help African women gain recognition on a global scale, attracting opportunities and resources that support their work and aspirations. Participants will leave equipped to navigate the media landscape, harness the power of digital platforms, and amplify their stories to effect meaningful change.
