Dodoma. Five people have died, and 49 others have been injured following a crash involving an AN Classic passenger bus travelling between Dodoma and Kigoma.

The incident occurred when the bus collided with a lorry and overturned in the Chigongwe area of Dodoma.

The acting Dodoma Regional Police Commander (RPC) Anania Amo, confirmed the accident occurred at 10 pm on March 3, 2025.

Speaking to The Citizen’s sister newspaper on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, RPC Amo explained that the bus, en route from Dodoma to Kigoma via Tabora, collided with the lorry while attempting to overtake it.

The collision caused the bus driver to lose control, leading the vehicle to overturn.

“The bus, travelling from Dodoma to Kasulu in Kigoma, hit the lorry from behind in the Chigongwe area while trying to overtake. As a result, the driver lost control, veered off the road, and the bus overturned, killing five people,” said the regional police chief.

Among the dead, three were men and two were women.

The injured, including 26 men and 23 women, were taken to Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, with one survivor transferred to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital for specialised treatment.

This is not the first incident involving AN Classic buses.

On December 7, 2022, another AN Classic bus, travelling from Tabora to Mbeya, was involved in a fatal accident in the Makongorosi area, Chunya District, Mbeya Region, which resulted in one death and four injuries.

According to the Traffic Police Division, between July and September 2024, 453 people lost their lives in road accidents, a decrease from the 477 fatalities recorded in the same period in 2023.

The number of injuries in 2024 stood at 835, compared to 782 the previous year.

The primary causes of these accidents include speeding, alcohol consumption, and poor infrastructure, failure to adhere to traffic regulations, mechanical failures, and driver negligence.
