Dar es Salaam. Fourteen passengers were injured in Kigoma Region, Tanzania, when a passenger bus collided with a cargo train on Sunday morning.

The bus, owned by Classic Company with registration number T545 DJW, struck a cargo train identified as Y611, which was en route from Dodoma to Kigoma.

According to Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) Head of Communications, Fredy Mwanjala, the accident took place at approximately 10:20 p.m. on November 9, 2024.

Mwanjala explained that the bus driver attempted to overtake another bus that had stopped to allow the train to cross at a railway-road crossing between Malagarasi and Nguruka. The overtaking maneuver resulted in a collision with the train.

The impact caused five of the train's 30 carriages to derail. Fourteen bus passengers, including eight women and six men, sustained minor injuries. There were no fatalities.

TRC has called on drivers and other road users to observe traffic regulations and practice caution at railway crossings to avoid similar incidents. The corporation extended its sympathies to the injured and assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
