Government declares end to water rationing in Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam.  The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr Amos Makala has declared end of water rationing in the Commercial capital after  scaling up of water production.

The government has cracked down on human activities along river banks, an initiative to preserve water sources as rains start in different parts of the country.

On October 24, 2022, the RC announced rationing after visiting the Upper and Lower Ruvu water plants that were facing decrease due to prolonged drought.

But, speaking on Friday during inspection at the Ruvu Water Treatment Plants in Dar es Salaam, Makalla said the initiative has brought relief to the residents.

"There has been drought in Dar es Salaam and the Coast region for about two to three weeks, but rains have started and the situation is good...so now the regions are getting enough water and even excess," he said.

The commissioner added: "The water level has returned to its normal volume, and as you know, the reliable water sources are Upper Ruvu, which contributes 196 million liters, and Lower Ruvu which contributes 270 million liters of water, making the total 466 million liters, and now we have enough water.

He said that there is an increase of 70 million liters of water from Kigamboni.

Equally, he stated that the revival of 20 wells has brought the total of 122 wells capable of producing 33.9 million liters of water.

In addition, Mr Makalla instructed the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (Dawasa) to complete the peripheral projects, including the Mshikamano project, which delivers water to Mbezi, Kibamba, Msakuzi, Madale, and Mpiji Magoe areas.
