Hippos kill 13 in Muleba District, says local leader

Last week, three people died and two others were severely injured after they were attacked by hippos while fishing in Lake Victoria.

Muleba.Thirteen people are feared to have been attacked and devoured to death by hippopotamus while fishing in Lake Victoria in Muleba District in 2013.

Nyakabango Ward executive officer Revocatus Mujumuzi said this yesterday as he was explaining to the Muleba South MP, Prof Anna Tibaijuka, about the challenges the district has been facing.

He said the animals were from the nearby Rubondo Island National Park.

In a solidarity move with the people in the district, Prof Tibaijuka gave Sh500,000 to 23 young people who had formed a home guard squad aimed at preventing game from invading people’s residences.

Last week, three people died and two others were severely injured after they were attacked by hippos while fishing in Lake Victoria.

Kimwani Ward councillor Silvester Mulija named those killed as being Mashaka Michael, 35, Aristides Scarion, 30, and Shedraka Selemani, 25, all residents in the ward.

According to him, those who sustained injuries were Mr Emanuel Mafilili,29, and Mr Mawazo Tibikanya, 25.

Reports have it that just a few days back, the hippos attacked and killed Severine Salvatory, 35, when he went fishing in the lake.
