History of tragedies at hajj pilgrimage

Death toll tops 700 near Mecca in stampede during hajj, say Saudi authorities

What you need to know:

Mina is where pilgrims carry out a symbolic stoning of the devil by throwing pebbles against three stone walls. It also houses more than 160,000 tents where pilgrims spend the night during the pilgrimage.

At least 717 people taking part in the Hajj pilgrimage have been killed in a stampede near the Islamic holy city of Mecca, officials in Saudi Arabia say.
Another 863 people were injured in the incident at Mina, which occurred as two million pilgrims were taking part in the Hajj's last major rite.
According to Tanzania's Council of Islamic Organisations, out of 2,000,000 pilgrims attended the worship Thursday, 1,500 are Tanzanians.
“We are closely following about the report on Mecca stampede. Untill now, we have not received any death report from Mecca,” says council’s spokesman Shekhe Rajabu Katimba.
Although Shekhe Rajabu Katimba is saying they’ve yet to receive death or injury reports from Tanzanian pilgrims in Mecca, a source close to the one of the Tanzanian pilgrim in Saudi Arabia says a Tanzanian has been killed and another is injured in the stampede.
Preparations for the Hajj were marred when a crane collapsed at Mecca's Grand Mosque this month, killing 109 people.
