He further expressed his optimism that expansion of the institute would enable it to receive many patients.

Dar es Salaam. The Executive Director of Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) Prof Mohamad Janabi has reiterated that the institute was unable to receive and accommodate a large number of patients due to shortage of buildings.

He further expressed his optimism that expansion of the institute would enable it to receive many patients.

He made the remarks when he addressed participants during a special event held at the cardiac institute on Thursday, June 14 where the institute received a cheque amounting to Sh100 million from the CRDB Bank as the Bank's contribution for construction of institute 's new facilities.

Earlier, Prof Janabi revealed that the construction of the facilities would cost at least Sh900 million.

“We experience acute shortage of wards and Intensive Care Units. At least 60 percent of patients who undergo heart surgeries are children while adults account for 40 percent hence there is a need to build new facilities to accommodate the patients," he said.

He further revealed that the institute in collaboration with relevant health ministry was planning to launch cardiac health centres across the country with a view to reaching many patients  with cardiovascular diseases.

For his part, the CRDB Bank chief executive officer (CEO), Dr Charles Kimei said his office would launch special bank cards for patients with a view to facilitating their  treatment at the cardiac institute.
