Mwanza. President John Magufuli is expected to grace a ceremony to sign contracts for renovation and building of a new ship, which will ply their trades in Lake Victoria.

The government, through Marine Services Company Limited (MSCL) entered a contract with a South Korea based company, whose name wasn’t disclosed. The two projects will cost over Sh151.4 billion.

Through the agreement the Soiuth Korea company will rehabilitate Mv Victoria as well as construct a new vessel, MV Butiama.

Addressing a press conference yesterday MSCL acting general manager Eric Hamissi said the signing ceremony marks the official commencement of implementation of the projects.

He said the development will ease transport services to Lake Zone residents.

He said the new ship will be built for 24 months.

According to him the new ship as well as rehabilitation of MV Victoria will increase the capacity of carrying passengers as well as cargo increase to 2400 and 800 tonnes respectively.

The ships will ply their trade between Mwanza, Bukoba via Kemendo Port, Musoma, Kisumu and Uganda.

MV Victoria, which was operating between Mwanza and Bukoba, suspended operations in 2014 due to technical problems. Its renovation will take up to 12 months, according to Mr Hamisi.
