  • The construction of the 100-meter-long bridge will improve road infrastructure, conservation activities and tourism in the Northern Serengeti National Park.

Serengeti. The Government of Tanzania in collaboration with the Government of Germany through the German Development Bank (KfW) is set to use Sh6.3 billion to implement bridge construction across the Kagatende River in the Serengeti National Park.

The construction of the 100-meter-long bridge will improve road infrastructure, conservation activities and tourism in the Northern Serengeti National Park.

In a statement to the Tanapa Board members who visited the park on Friday March 14, 2025, the Serengeti National Park Warden, Assistant Senior Commissioner, Stephano Msumi said the previous bridge was destroyed by heavy rains between 2020 and 2025.

“Tanapa through construction experts is assessing the flood history ni Kagatende river for the past 30 years to determine the exact height of the new bridge to be built,” said Commissioner Msumi

The project, which is expected to be commissioned in November 2025, will cost 2.2 million euros, or about Sh6.3 billion", the Economic Commissioner said.

The Tanapa Board Chairman, retired General George Waitara urged the management to ensure the project is completed on time to facilitate conservation and tourism activities.

This bridge is important for the well-being of the Serengeti National park. We need to have a better infrastructure in our national parks,” Said General Waitara

Tanapa Head of Conservation Development Unit, Assistant Commissioner for Conservation, Nuhu Daniel said construction of the bridge will improve tourism activities in the Northern Senapa zone by enabling tourism stakeholders to use the other side of the Kagatende river in Lamai area, especially during the great wildebeest migration from the Serengeti National Park to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a massive annual event where over a million wildebeest, along with zebras and other animals, travel a 500-mile (800 km) loop through Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing.
