Moshi. The Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) will start to treat kidney patients, it was revealed here yesterday by hospital director Dr Gilliard Masenga.
Speaking at an event to commemorate World Kidney Day, Dr Masenga said the move was prompted by the growing number of people with kidney complications who are seeking treatment at the facility.
The hospital boss said KCMC has already hired a spealist doctor on the complications, in preparation for launching the unit. “Due to an increase in the number of patients with kidney complications who are coming to the hospital almost every day, we deemed it necessary to establish a kidney unit here,” said Dr Masenza.
Speaking at the event, Moshi District Commissioner Novatus Makunga said kidney complications had become a serious problem for many wananchi.
He said a study showed that eight to 16 per cent of people across the globe were suffering from kidney complications as of December last year. He added that a study conducted in 2009 showed that by 2023, 70 per cent of people with kidney complications would be in South Saharan countries.
“Tanzania is in the 54th position in the list of countries where many people die of kidney problems; so it is important that KCMC is planning to establish a unit for addressing the challenge,” Mr Makunga said.
