Kikwete hails inclusive, strategic approach to Vision 2050

Dar es Salaam. Former President Jakaya Kikwete has commended the formulation of Tanzania’s Vision 2050, describing the process as professional, inclusive, and participatory, reflecting the needs, expectations, and aspirations of the majority of Tanzanians.

Speaking during the official launch of Vision 2050 on Thursday, July 17, Mr Kikwete said the strategy aims to transition Tanzania from a lower middle-income to a higher-middle-income economy. This goal, he said, is both realistic and achievable.

“I met with the National Planning Commission team twice, provided several suggestions, and was pleased to see that the vision’s core objective is to lift Tanzania out of a low-income economy,” he said.

“On behalf of my fellow retirees, we thank you and appreciate you for involving us in its preparation. The decision to formulate a long-term development strategy demonstrates the government’s strong commitment.”

Mr Kikwete noted that international benchmarks were taken into account during the drafting process, reinforcing the viability of Tanzania’s economic transformation.

“Achieving higher economic levels is possible for Tanzania. We have what other countries have—so why not us? The key lies in setting clear strategies that will get us there,” he emphasised.

He further applauded the pairing of the vision document with an implementation plan, saying it would fast-track progress and ensure that results are delivered ahead of schedule. He also welcomed the decision to table the vision in Parliament, describing it as a significant step in ensuring the document’s legitimacy and long-term sustainability.
