Dar es Salaam. Former Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete has said the late President Benjamin Mkapa regarded service delivery to the people as an overriding priority.
Speaking on Monday during a commemoration of the first anniversary of Mkapa’s death at Mlimani City Hall in Dar es Salaam where the guest of honour was President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Mr Kikwete said Tanzania’s third president was also visionary, patriotic, and hardworking.
“During his presidency, there was a shortage of health workers, and the Mkapa Foundation was committed to recruiting staff to serve in rural areas.  He really helped a lot,” he said.
"When I became president, Mkapa was one of my closest confidants and reliable advisor. Celebrating his life, and living his legacy is the right thing to do. Mkapa deserves such a symposium, and I hope this will not be a one-off event, but one that will continue," said Mr Kikwete.
