Kilimanjaro bus accident kills seven, injures 32

What you need to know:

  • The victims were travelling from Ugweno to Dar es Salaam.

Mwanga. Seven people have been confirmed dead and 32 others injured after a bus belonging to Mvungi Company overturned early Thursday morning at Mamba Village, Msangeni Ward, Ugweno Division, Mwanga District.

The victims were travelling from Ugweno to Dar es Salaam.

Kilimanjaro Regional Fire and Rescue Commander, Jeremiah Mkomagi, confirmed the fatalities, stating that the accident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM.

Among the deceased are three women, including a young child, and four men.

Mkomagi said that the incident took place in a hilly area, adding that the bus veered off the road while attempting to overtake another vehicle, and eventually slipped in the mud caused by the rain.

“The bus fell into a ravine after it lost control. The deceased included three women and four men,” Mkomagi said.

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Nurdin Babu, also weighed in on the cause of the accident, attributing it to the driver’s attempt to overtake a broken-down vehicle in the wet, slippery conditions.

“The driver tried to overtake the other vehicle, but due to the ongoing rain, the road became slippery. The bus lost control and overturned,” said Babu.

The injured passengers have been rushed to KCMC, Mawenzi, and Usangi hospitals for treatment. Local authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. A full report will be provided in due course.

This tragic accident comes just days after a similar incident in Same District on March 30, 2025, in which seven people were killed, including six members of a choir from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania.
