  • The event emphasized the importance of youth engagement in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and served as a platform for networking, skill-sharing, and collaboration.

Morogoro. Earlier this week, the non-profit organization Kijana Initiative Organization (KIO) hosted the RTS Summit at Jordan University in Morogoro, drawing over 250 young people from across Tanzania and beyond.

The event, held under the theme “Engaging Youth in Sustainable Development Goals: Strategies for Building Sustainable and Inclusive Youth Movements,” aimed to inspire youth participation in tackling global and local challenges.

Coinciding with International Volunteer Day, the summit featured panel discussions, exhibitions, and success stories from young changemakers who have made significant contributions to community development through volunteerism.

The event emphasized the importance of youth engagement in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and served as a platform for networking, skill-sharing, and collaboration.

Notable attendees included Morogoro Regional Youth Development Officer Ms Mariana and regional media leaders, who joined participants in celebrating the power of youth-led initiatives.

Speaking at the event, KIO Executive Director Rose Mmbaga reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to empowering youth as key stakeholders in development.

She highlighted how the summit created opportunities for learning, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas, enabling young people to contribute creatively and meaningfully to their communities.

Ms Mariana, who officiated the event, praised KIO’s efforts to create opportunities for young people, especially women and girls in rural areas. She underscored the critical role of youth in driving societal progress and encouraged them to take an active role in shaping their communities.

Empowering stories of change

The summit also showcased inspiring success stories from alumni of Raleigh Tanzania, who demonstrated how volunteerism can lead to personal and professional growth.

Among the speakers was Sarah Shedura from Iringa, whose handmade basket business has empowered rural women economically while preserving local traditions.

Another highlight was Angel Beno, an entrepreneur from Morogoro, who shared how she and her sister transformed their tailoring skills into a thriving business that supports women in their community.

Another notable speaker, Lawrence Lukatenga, recounted his journey from a volunteer to serving in the British Army.

His story demonstrated how volunteerism equipped him with leadership and entrepreneurial skills that transformed his life. Lawrence now collaborates with KIO to inspire other young people to embrace community service as a pathway to success.

The RTS Summit left a lasting impact, serving as both a celebration of volunteerism and a launchpad for youth empowerment.

KIO reaffirmed its mission to create safe spaces for women and girls, amplify their voices, and expand outreach to rural communities through projects planned for 2025.

By celebrating youth-driven initiatives and fostering dialogue, KIO is solidifying its role as a platform for change, empowering the next generation to leave a meaningful and lasting legacy in their communities.
