Latra unveils Dar es Salaam-Dodoma SGR fares

Dar es Salaam. The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (Latra) has unveiled passenger fares for Dar es Salaam and Dodoma's highly anticipated Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Adult tickets will cost Sh31,000, with children aged 12 and under travelling for half price.
This fare is slightly lower than existing bus fares on the route, which typically range from Sh29,000 to Sh35,000 depending on the class.
Latra's announcement marks a significant milestone for Tanzania's transportation infrastructure.
The SGR promises to enhance connectivity and provide a more comfortable travel experience for passengers.
Latra further mentioned that the fare from Dodoma to Makutupora will be Sh37,000 for adults and Sh18,500 for children aged 12 and under.
These fares are announced just a few days before the train officially starts its operations in July this year, as previously announced.
According to the Latra statement released on Monday, June 10, 2024, these fares have been approved by the Latra Board of Directors, considering the distance in kilometres.
“These fares are after processing requests brought by the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) and other stakeholders,” the statement explained.
The statement outlined other conditions to be met before these fares can be applied, including the service provider's (TRC) having a transportation license.
"To have the certification of the safety of the railway infrastructure and carriages, to use an electronic ticketing system, to integrate the electronic ticketing system with Latra systems," Latra’s Head of Public Relations and Communications, Salum Pazzy, said in a statement.
"The fare to be paid by an adult and a child over the age of 12 is Sh69.51 per kilometre, and a child aged 4 to 12 will pay Sh34.76 per kilometre. Furthermore, a child under four (4) will not pay a fare," it said.
Earlier, the proposed fares by TRC from Dar es Salaam-Morogoro were for the third class: Sh24,794 per adult and Sh12,397 for kids between the ages of 4 and 12.
For the Economy Class, the same route was Sh29,752 per adult and Sh14,876 for kids.
As for the third class from Dar es Salaam-Dodoma Sh59, 494 per adult and Sh29, 747 for kids between the ages of 4 and 12. Economy class: Sh71,392 per adult and Sh35,696 for kids.
