Lukuvi halts Mindu dam evictions

Eight cabinet ministers have visited the Mororogo dam with a view to learning various things pertaining to water law.

Morogoro. The minister for Land, Housing and Human Settlement Development, Mr William Lukuvi, has directed Morogoro Regional Commissioner Stephen Kebwe to suspend eviction of residents living around the Mindu dam until further notice.

Mr Lukuvi issued the order during the beginning of eight ministers’ tour across the country to resolve land-related conflicts.

Some of residents, who stay within 500 metres of the Mindu dam, have resisted eviction despite contravening the law.

Mr Lukuvi stressed that the minister of water will issue further directive.

He revealed that they have started a tour of areas with land related conflicts after being directed by President John Magufuli.

Apart from Mr Lukuvi, others include minister for State in the President's Office, Regional Administration and Local Government Selemani Jafo, Dr Hamis Kingwangala (Natural Resources and Tourism), Hussein Mwinyi (Defence and National Service) and deputy minister for Agriculture Omari Mgumba.

Others are minister for Livestock and Fisheries Luhaga Mpina, Water and Irrigation minister Prof Makame Mbarawa and Musa Sima, the deputy minister in the State Vice President Office (Environment).

Briefing journalists, Mr Lukuvi asked  Morogoro Regional Commissioner Dr Steven Kebwe to suspend the exercise of relocating residents living close to the dam until an apt solution is found.

"Eight ministers have come here to learn about grievances of people living around the dam, so we have decided to halt he eviction exercise,” he said.

About 133 residents are required to vacate.
