Moshi. A man believed to have a mental health condition allegedly set fire to the old Moshi Primary Court building in Kilimanjaro Region on Monday, August 24, 2026, destroying a records room and documents stored inside.
Kilimanjaro Regional Fire and Rescue Commander Jeremiah Mkomagi confirmed the incident, saying firefighters managed to contain the blaze and save eight of the building’s nine rooms.
“Today, August 24, we received a report of a fire at the old primary court building. Our officers arrived at the scene, found the building on fire and managed to put it out,” Commander Mkomagi said.
He said the fire was deliberately started by a person suspected to have a mental health condition.
No deaths or injuries were reported, he said, adding that the fire destroyed one office and the court records room, along with documents stored there.
“The damage was limited to one office and the records room, including the documents kept there. Eight of the nine rooms in the court building were saved,” he said.
The fire service also saved the Social Welfare Department building in Moshi, Commander Mkomagi said.
He urged members of the public to take precautions against fire incidents and report emergencies promptly through the Fire and Rescue Force emergency number, 114.
