Masaju sworn in as Attorney General

Dar es Salaam. President Dk. John Magufuli today swore in George Masaju as the country’s Attorney General (AG) after his appointment yesterday.

This is the president’s first appointment after yesterday’s colorful inaugural ceremony at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam attracting thousands of city residents, guests from within and outside the country and about eight head of African states.

The appointment enables Masaju to retain the job he's held since January 5, this year when he was promoted by Retired President, Jakaya Kikwete to fill the vacant position left by Judge, Fredrick Werema who resigned.

Former AG, Judge Werema retired in December 2014 over the Tegeta escrow scandal after holding the office since October 20, 2009, though he went on insisting on no wrongdoings in the issue saying his advice was 'misunderstood.'

Speaking after the event, Masaju pledged to discharge all his efforts in implementing his duties saying all legal issues requiring consultation of his office will be dealt with great integrity.

“I also thank Tanzanians for the role they played in respecting the country's rules and regulations throughout the election process, something that greatly contributed in peace and harmony maintenance” he said.

Before joining the Attorney General’s chambers in 2009 as Deputy AG, Masaju served as a legal advisor to the president. He also serves as the Board Chairman of the Law School of Tanzania.
