MCL lauded for reporting stories on disability

Mwananchi Communications Limited has been applauded for working closely with the Tanzania Association of the Deaf (TAD) by writing stories on deaf people.
Queen Majembe the TAD Secretary in Mbeya made the remarks at the beginning of the deaf week happening in Mbeya at a National level from Monday this week.
The week brought together different stakeholders who champion rights for people living with disabilities to discuss challenges facing people with disabilities under the theme ‘A World where Deaf People Everywhere can Sign Anywhere’.
She says, the week was initiated with the aim of promoting human rights for deaf people as well as giving opportunities to deaf without any obstacles including communication barrier.
The Rungwe District Commissioner Jaffar Haniu said, this year’s theme aims at removing all the obstacles that stops deaf people and give them conducive environment to participate in the country’s development.
As part of the government initiative to support the learning and teaching process the government is in the process to identify the number of children with special needs in Tanzania in order to identify the kind of support needed at an early age.
He called upon parents to enroll all deaf children who have reached school going age for them to get their right to education.
“I am informed that there are 20 deaf children who are not in schools. Children with disabilities should all be enrolled,” said Haniu.
TDA Chairperson Selina Mlemba requested the government to give them a building that will allow them to do their activities. The building will be a link to TDA and the government as it will ease communication and allow them to work together.
Mary Kessi is the Violence and Injury Coordinator at the World Health Origination (WHO) in Tanzania. She said WHO leaves no one behind including people with special needs.
She said, they are working closely with the government to make sure they provide the required support and ensure all people are part and parcel of development regardless of disabilities.
