Dar es Salaam. An increased number of scholars holding a certificate, diploma or a bachelor’s degrees are turning to vocational training to obtain skills that will enable them to venture into self-employment.
“In the past, it was rare to find a degree, diploma and certificate holder at the vocational training center. However, they slowly understand how vocational studies may take them away from the unemployment demon,” said the Vocational Educational and Training Authority (Veta) Public Relations Manager Mr Sitta Peter.
He is persistent that even employers in the industrial sector are currently more attracted to employ people with vocational skills since they are keen to see increase efficiency and work with productive people.
Some are acquiring vocational skills to establish their own jobs, he said during an ongoing Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) on Friday.
According to data provided by Veta, there were 2 people with a bachelor’s degree who applied at the centre in 2017, 12 with a diploma and 46 were certificate holders. However, none of those with a degree were selected but 8 and 9 applicants of diploma and certificates, respectively, got a chance.
Again during the 2018 registration year, two people with a bachelor’s degree applied, 10 with diploma and 94 with certificates.
This time, only one applicant with a bachelor’s degree was selected, while 4 and 20 with diploma and certificates applicants respectively got chance.
In 2018, only 5101 out of total of 17,128 applicants in Veta owned centers for professionals that had completed Form six, Form four, Standard seven and below Standard seven were selected.
