Vice President, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, has ordered arrest of any midwife who fail to adhere to his professional conduct and cause death of a pregnant woman or child during delivery.
Speaking during commemoration of World Midwives Day in Dodoma today, Ms Hassan said the government would not tolerate negligence among heath sector personnel. He said discipline was among factors which would enable reduction of avoidable deaths of mother and child.
She revealed that some deaths of mothers or children in health centres were caused by personal feuds and conflicts between the attendant in charge and the patient.
“After God, creation by the midwife follows. You help God on that duty, why you don’t honour your profession?” she questioned.
She also alerted the midwives of increas8ing rate of maternal deaths where now out of 100,000 pregnancies, 556 women die as opposed to the past rate of 432 pregnant women.
She said it was estimated that every 30 minutes a pregnant woman die.
However the Vice President said the government has already issued directives at every level of health committee to discuss and investigate any mother and child death on their jurisdiction to reveal cause of that particular death.
