Msimbazi River for massive overhaul to curb flooding in Dar

The Uda Rapid Transit (Udart) has had to close operations in the past due to flooding in Jangwani area.

What you need to know:

Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government Authorities), Mr Josephat Kandege, said the move will save some Dar es Salaam residents from getting displaced due to flooding waters – flowing through the river – which repeatedly overwhelm the city’s drainage systems.

Dodoma. The government will float a tender next month that will culminate into a complete overhaul of the Msimbazi River in Dar es Salaam, the Parliament heard on Friday.

The move, according to the Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government Authorities), Mr Josephat Kandege, will save some Dar es Salaam residents from getting displaced due to flooding waters – flowing through the river – which repeatedly overwhelm the city’s drainage systems.

“We will float the tender in July 2018,” Mr Kandege said.

He was responding to a question from Ms Susan Lyimo (Special Seats - Chadema) who had wanted to know the government’s position over relocating the headquarters for Dar es Salaam urban rapid transit operator – Udart – from the flood prone Jangwani area.

But in response, Mr Kandege said there was no reason of relocating the headquarters and that what was needed was to improve the Msimbazi River in such a way that all the flooding water should flow freely into the ocean without causing flooding.
